Struggle and Gratitude

Spoke with a friend yesterday who was not in the best mind states. She spent a great deal of the time speaking about how the world had done her wrong. How she didn't get the things in life she should have had to get started. How she has never had enough money or a nice place, or a nice life.

Her expectation was that she should have been left an inheritance by family, she should have been cared for by a man, she should have.....

At one point, I actually laughed during the conversation, knowing the she makes about $60,000 a year, has a nice apartment, new car, and enjoys a very relaxed life without much heavy responsibility.

Her apparent struggle in life was completely real to her. She only sees lack, loss, and neglect. I asked her, "What are you grateful for?", "What has come easy for you?". She could not name one thing.
At the end of the conversation, I was quite drained, but also looked at my own life to see the stories I was telling myself. Had I been cheated out of life? Where had life dealt me the short end?
I was suddenly filled with so much thankfulness and appreciation for my accomplishments. I praised my friend for teaching me the lesson that life's struggles are sometimes in our minds and gratitude is some times the best way to move through these feelings of lack, scarcity, and fear.

What are you happy and grateful for today? What are you accomplishments?

Be good to yourselves and each other,
Thomas
